Circulatory system Flashcards
what is the circulatory system
the circulatory system is how nutrients and waste products that are carried in our body
the circulatory system….
affects our health
why does blood need to move smoothly ?
- so that oxygen and food are carried around the body
- carbon dioxide and waste products are removed from the body
what are the parts of the circulatory system
- heart
- blood
- blood vessels
what is the heart
the heart is a muscular pump that pumps blood around the body
what is blood
blood is a liquid that transports substances ( eg. oxygen , digested food and carbon dioxide )
what is blood vessels
blood vessels is a network of tubes that carry blood around the body
what are the 3 types of blood vessels
- arteries
- veins
- capillaries
what is the function of arteries
arteries carries blood from the heart
what is the structure of arteries
it has a thick muscular wall to withstand the high blood pressure from the heart
what is the function the veins
the veins carry blood towards the heart
what is the structure of the veins
valves are present to ensure blood flows in one direction as blood flow is slow and may flow backwards
what is the function of the capillary
- it supplies blood from the arteries to the body cells , organs and tissues
- it connects the arteries to the veins
what is the structure of the capillary
- it is a one cell thick wall which allows efficient exchange of gases between the blood and capillars
- narrow vessel that only allows one red blood vessel to travel and one time
