What is cancer?
The abnormal, uncontrolled growth of cells.
What are malignant tumours?
Those which can spread to healthy tissue.
What is metastasis?
When cells move away from the primary tumour and invade other parts of the body via the blood.
What can cancer be caused by?
Chemical carcinogens (e.g. those found in tobacco smoke), ionising radiation(e.g. UV and X-rays).
What did Richard Doll do?
He surveyed 700 patients, and came to the conclusion that lung cancer is caused by smoking. Many were sceptical so he surveyed over 40 000 doctors, and monitored their health. All the doctors who developed lung cancer were smokers.
What treatments are there for cancer?
Surgery
Chemotherapy
Radiotherapy
Bone marrow, or stem cell therapy.
Is cancer ongoing?
Yes.
