16
Q

What is the function of adrenaline?

A

Increases blood sugar, heart rate, breathing rate and blood pressure at times of stress.

17
Q

What is the function of oestrogen?

A

Controls female sexual development.

18
Q

What is the function of testosterone?

A

Controls development of male sexual characteristics.

19
Q

How are endocrine glands stimulated?

A

By chemical changes in the blood, e.g. changes in blood sugar concentration.

20
Q

What does ADH do?

A

Increases reabsorption of water by the kidneys when they hypothalamus detests that the blood water content is too low.

21
Q

What did Banting and Best do?

A

They extracted insulin. Banting released that digestive juices in the pancreas destroyed the hormone when other scientists tried to extract it from a complete pancreas. So instead they decided to tie off the pancreatic duct in healthy dogs. This means the cells producing digestive juice withered away. The cells which were left, were removed, mashed up and the extract was injected into diabetic dogs. The dogs recovered.

22
Q

What is homeostasis?

A

The way the body maintains a constant internal environment.

23
Q

Where is the body temperature monitored and controlled?

A

The thermoregulatory centre.

24
Q

What does sweating do?

A

Helps to cool the body.

25
Q

Where is the thermoregulatory centre?

A

In the hypothalamus.

26
Q

How is heat lost from the skin?

A

By evaporation and radiation.
