Gas Exchange Flashcards
Describe the pathway of oxygen to the capillaries surrounding the alveoli.
Air is breathed in through the mouth/nose it travels down the trachea, into the bronchi which splits into bronchioles, eventually to the alveoli.
What 3 body parts aid ventilation?
The diaphragm, the ribs and the intercostal muscles.
What is the function of the ciliated epithelial cells, and goblet cells?
The goblet cells produce and secrete a sticky protein mucus which traps bacteria and dust that travels down the trachea, the ciliated epithelial cells have cilia- hair-like projections which sweep the mucus up the trachea to be egested.
How are the alveoli adapted for gas exchange?
Thin walls, large surface area, constant blood flow.
What is breathing coordinated by?
The respiratory centre in the brain.
How are high levels of carbon dioxide detected?
By pH receptors.
