What do dieticians do?
Dieticians advise about variations in diet to control normal growth and some health problems.
What is a balanced diet?
The whole range of nutrients, in the correct amounts.
How does a person become malnourished?
Their diet is unbalanced.
What can malnutrition lead to?
Obesity, or anorexia, or deficiency diseases such as scurvy, rickets and anaemia.
What things can cause the amount of nutrients needed to change?
Pregnancy.
Growth.
Amount of physical exercise.
Disorders such as diabetes, high blood pressure and heart disease.
What are the 7 groups needed in a balanced diet?
Carbohydrates. Fats. Protein. Vitamins. Minerals. Fibre. Water
What foods contain a rich source of carbohydrate?
Potato, pasta, cereal, cakes, bread, whole grains, puddings, fruit, milk.
What foods contain a rich source of fat?
Butter, chocolate, fish, cheese, nuts, meat.
What foods contain a rich source of vitamin D?
Oily fish, eggs, cereals, powdered milk.
What foods contain a rich source of vitamin A?
cheese, eggs, oily fish, milk and yoghurt.

Oranges, red and green peppers, strawberries, blackcurrants, broccoli, potatoes, Brussels sprouts.

Provide energy, store energy, insulate the body, cushions body organs.

Healthy skin and immune system, night vision.

Needed for the absorption of calcium which is needed for strengthening bones.

Healthy skin and immune system, healing wounds, and iron absorption.

Strengthening bones and teeth, needed for blood clotting.

Needed for the production of haemoglobin which carries oxygen in red blood cells.

Keep fluid balance in the body.

Prevent constipation, aid healthy digestion, provides roughage to keep food moving.

Needed in chemical reactions, transporting substances and removing waste.
What does calcium deficiency cause?
Increased risk of cardiovascular disease.
Severe asthma.
Cancer.
What does iron deficiency cause?
Anaemia.
What are the consequences of excess salt intake?
High Blood Pressure.
What are the consequences of excess sugar intake?
Cavities, obesity, type 2 diabetes, liver failure, kidney disease, high blood pressure, heart disease.
What are the benefits of omega 3?
Regulates cholesterol levels, benefits your hearts health.
What does a food analyst do?
Uses a range of techniques to determine the contents of foods and the quantities.
What happens when you add iodine solution to a starch?
It produces a purple-black colour.
What happens when you add biuret reagent to protein?
Changes from blue to purple
