The Coastal Zone - [CASE STUDY] Essex Saltmarshes Flashcards
1
Q
How are the saltmarshes being managed sustainably?
A
- They are being conserved.
- Managed retreat, sustainable development.
2
Q
What has been done to the saltmarshes?
A
- 400 years of reclamation history is being reversed by deliberately allowing rising sea levels to flood large areas (Managed retreat), acting as gaps in sea defences. This comes at a cost of £12 million.
- Sea wall defences allow the low-lying area to flood and separates existing arable land (Land capable of being ploughed).

Q
Why Essex?
