Q

What was done?

A

82 mixed tenure residential homes were created, taking innovative approaches to energy conservation and sustainability.

Among the houses are commercial buildings, an exhibition centre, a children’s nursery and a show flat so that visitors can see what it’s like to live at BedZed.

Q

How was it achieved?

A

BedZed was built using natural, recycled or reclaimed materials. All wood was approved by the Forest Stewardship Council or was comparable with internationally recognised environmental organisations, ensuring it was sustainably sourced.

Buildings are constructed from thermally massive materials that store and release heat as required.

South facing to maximise heat gain (Passive solar gain).

Designed to promote walking, cycling and use of public transport. If cars are needed, they are shared and there are free electric charging points.

It is carbon-neutral and was built on reclaimed land.

Some figures: They use 45% less electricity, 58% less water than an average British home, recycle 60% of their waste and 81% less energy for heating.
