The Coagulation System Flashcards
What are the three main stages to Haemostasis
- Vascular Spasm
- Platelet Activation and Plug Formation (Primary Haemostasis)
- Coagulation (Secondary Haemostasis)
What are the two storage granules found in platelets?
Alpha granules
Electron dense granules
What is the extrinsic pathway triggered by?
Trauma to extra-vascular cells
What is the intrinsic pathway triggered by?
Damaged blood vessels
What is thrombocytopaenia? What is the definition of it
Low platelet count, <100,000 / ml of blood
How is Glanzmann’s Thrombocytopenia caused?
Mutation leading to abnormal GPIIb / IIIa, affecting platelet aggregation
What is the genetic basis of Haemophillia?
Recessive sex linked X-chromosome disorder
What is the pharmacological basis of Aspirin’s activity?
COX 1 Irreversible Inhibitor
COX 2 activity modification
What is the pharmacological basis of Clopidogrel?
ADP Receptor Antagonist
Clopidogrel is a pro-drug. What does this mean?
It gets metabolized into it’s active form by hepatic CYP2C19 (a form of the P450 enzyme)
State two anti-coagulant drugs
Warfarin
Heparin
What is Warfarin?
Anticoagulant, Vitamin K antagonist. Many clotting factors reply on reduced Vit K
