Antonio de Montesinos
born in spain and arrives in Espanola in 1510, he is a dominican missionary and on december 21, 1511 he gives a sermon concerned about the treatment of the Arawaks. He was concerned about their mistreatment from the encomendero. this was considered harassy so he was forced to flee back to spain
Bartolome de las Casas
Born in Cevill, Spain in 1474, his father dies young and he studied to become a priest, he had connections to columbus so in 1502 he went to the new world and became an encomendero. in 1514, he began preaching against the encomienda in puerto rico and becomes a friar before going back to spain as a member of the courts to support his cause. in 1550, las casas goes before the spanish court to debate against sepulveda about the treatment of the indians. this resulted in sepulveda’s book being banned.
Encomienda
a futal system in the new world that created lords, the spaniards were rewarded for their work by being gives labor from the native people.

formed because queen isabella did not approve of slavery of the indians because they were her subjects. the document was written in 1513 and must be read to the new world natives before attacking them
Juan Gines de Sepulveda
a powerful lawyer at the time. argued that the treatment of the indians was just because the natives did horrible things and believed they were breaking natural laws. debated against de las casas in front of the spanish court and his book was later banned
Society of Jesus (Jesuits)
discovered by st. ignatius of loyola and gets approved by the pope in 1540. jesuit missionaries were highly trained and organized (had 8-12 years of training). jesuit college was founded in 1541 in quimbra portugal
Christovao ferreira
born in portugal in 1580 and in 1596, he enters the society of jesus and becomes a novice, he then continues on to jesuit college and was given an opportunity to go overseas to complete his education. he arrives in Macau and finds many young missionaries in training. over the next 25 years, ferreira tried to convert many japanese to the christian fate. by July 1633, ferreira became a senior jesuit in japan due to the executions and capturing occurring. on October 18, 1633 he was captured and forced to renounce his catholic fate. he then changes his name and (chuano), married a japanese woman and worked against the christians

a melting pot of cultures, people spoke many different languages and chinese traded silks to japan for their silver. where ferreira found young missionaries in training
Martinho Shikimi
a japanese missionary that studied with ferreira to become a jesuit. because of the japanese tourture he abandoned the christian fate along with ferreira
Fumie
a bronze icon with jesus hanging on the cross that was put on the ground in japan. people were forced to line up and step on the icon, if someone refused, they were found to be christian and killed or tourtured until they renowned their beliefs
“the star”
the jesuit in the story living in the future begins to question his beliefs when a super nova occurs and the star of Bethlehem destroys a planet with people living on it. he then begins to question the will of god and if he was really good, why would he allow a peaceful, happy society to be destroyed.
