Thomas Clarkson
born in 1760 and was son of a clergyman. in 1785 he entered a latin essay contest asking “is it lawful to enslave the nonconscenting?” he then goes on to win the contest and devotes his life to the abolition of slavery. his anti slave movement began to end the slave trade, then to end slavery itself.
John locke
part of the secular opposition also thought of as the enlightenment. argued that an ideal society believed slavery had no place in england but he worked and invested in a slave trade company
Adam Smith
part of the secular opposition. he believed that paying for a slave’s health is more expensive than paying for employees, but he believed the use of slaves was efficient on the sugar plantations
quakers
begin the religious opposition of slavery. by 1761 quakers banned anyone involved in the slave trade and in 1781 slave owners could not be quakers. many of the british viewed the quakers as strange.
william wilberforce
born in 1789, he was a member of parliament that devoted his life to end the slave trade. he was a great speaker. every year he brought a bill to parliament to end slave trade. he worked with thomas clarkson who interviewed people and gathered info for wilberforce to use. in 1807 wilberforce’s bill to end slave trade is passed
Abolition act
ends all slavery in england in july 1833. following the emancipation, planters and abolitionists get together to pay the slave owners for their losses.
Inconfidencia mineira
conspiracy developed by tiradentes to develop a plan to rebel and form an independent nation similar to the U.S. in 1788 all conspirators are arrested and tiradentes is killed and quartered in 1792
Tiridentes
teeth puller, comes up with a conspiracy called the inconfidencia mineira in brazil to rebel against the british and form an independent nation similar to the U.S. in 1788 because many people were upset about the large taxes they were being forced to pay. all conspirators are arrested and tiradenties is killed and quartered as a warning to others.
tailors revolt
takes place in 1798 in bahia because people wanted to do away with slavery.
Law of the Land
1850, tried to put an end to competition by giving no land grants and forcing all land to be purchased from the state Favored large land owners and those who have large groups of slaves but directed against poor European immigrants who began to come into brazil after the end of the slave trade. This forced the poor european immigrants to replace the slaves
Law of the Free Womb
law passed in 1871 in Brazil. freeing all children born to slave mothers, but must work until age 21
Sexagenarian law
passed in 1885, frees all slaves over the age of 65
golden law
passed in 1888 by congress and signed by princess isabella freeing all slaves in brazil. at this time 92 thousand immigrants go to brazil.
