Pedro Alvares Cabral
in March 1500, the portuguese send him on an expedition with 13 ships around the coast of africa. he finds the coast of brazil in april of 1500 along with the natives. he distinguishes the natives by their language (tupi and tapuya). because he could not communicate with the natives, he left 2 convicts behind to learn the native language but the natives do not want them.
degregados
2 convicts (caramuru and ramalho) that become cultural intermediaries. they learn the languages, marry and have children with the natives.
donatary captainicies
portuguese discover dye wood in brazil and trade things of value to the natives to cut down the wood. the french then begin king the same thing, causing warfare to break out. this results in the captaincies. brazil is divided into 14 captaincies to be colonized during the mid 1530s. this system breaks down because people do not like the captains, only 2 end up being successful because they have good relations with the natives and begin plantation based economies
tome de sousa
arrives to brazil in 1549 with 1000 men and 6 missionaries from the jesuits. He forms a capital for all of brazil and the jesuits take control of education and portuguese/native relations. he is initially interested in converting the natives but it did not work, so mission villages were created along the coast of brazil

a french colony formed in Brazilin rio degenero but conflict arose with the portuguese and they were driven out.
Engenho
a sugar mill where sugar is produced. run by the señor de engenho. to be successful needs capital (generated by sugar industry, loans and credit), land (acquired by land grants) and labor (indians initially used followed by africans). many were held by private owners and religious orders
cana
sugar cane, must be planted 14-24 months before harvest
lavradores de cana
people that own their own land and slaves but do not own their own mills so they lease them from others
casa grande
“big house”, where the master of the plantations live
