in March 1500, the portuguese send him on an expedition with 13 ships around the coast of africa. he finds the coast of brazil in april of 1500 along with the natives. he distinguishes the natives by their language (tupi and tapuya). because he could not communicate with the natives, he left 2 convicts behind to learn the native language but the natives do not want them.

He forms a capital for all of brazil and the jesuits take control of education and portuguese/native relations. he is initially interested in converting the natives but it did not work, so mission villages were created along the coast of brazil
