The Cerebellum Flashcards
How many lobes is the cerebellum divided into?
3- superior, inferior and flocculonodular
How many layers does the cerebellum grey matter consist of?
3- molecular, piriform and granular (from superficial to deep)
What is the cerebellum known to be involved in?
The process by which novel motor tasks can be preformed automatically after practise
Also involved in mental rehearsing of a task
Monitors each movement sequence for mistakes
Involved in postural fixation and stabilisation
What are the functional divisions of the cerebllum?
The vestibulocerebellum, the spinocerebellum and the pontocerebellum
What does the vestibulocerebellum consist of?
The flocculonodular lobe with the fastigial nucleus
What connects the vestibulocerebellum to the vestibular nucleus?
The middle and inferior peduncles
What gives rise to the lateral vestibulospinal tract?
Projection from anterior vermis to the lateral vestibular nucleus
What is the function of the lateral vestibulospinal tract?
Keeps centre of gravity between feet
How do the fastigial nuclei project to gaze centres?
through superior cerebellar peduncles via medial longitudinal fasciculi
What are the major inputs into the spinocerebellum?
The spinocerebellar tracts
What is the main output of the spinocerebellum?
To the contralateral reticular formation and red nucleus of brainstem
What does chronic alcoholism lead to?
Gait ataxia
What does midline tumor in floor of 4th ventricle lead to?
Trunk ataxia
Where does the pontine reticulospinal tract descend?
Anterior column ipsilaterally
Where does the medullary reticulospinal tract descend?
The lateral column bilaterally
