CSF, Ventricles and Meninges Flashcards
What does the CNS develop from?
Neural tube
What are the chambers lined with?
Ependymal cells
What are ependymal cells?
Line chambers
Single epithelial-like cells
Partly responsible for CSF production
What does the ventricular system empty into?
Subarachnoid space
What is the role of CSF?
Lymph drainage of the brain
Auto-regulation of cerebral blood flow
Provides mechanical and immunological protection
Where is CSF mainly produced
Choroid plexus
Where else is CSF derived from?
Seepage from capillaries
Water from metabolism
Where does CSF circulate through?
Ventricular system and subarachnoid space
What is the choroid plexus?
Network of blood capillaries in each ventricle
What separates the ependyma of the ventricles from the surface?
Pia Matter
What are the ventricles?
4 CSF filled chambers in the brain
What does each cerebral hemisphere contain?
A lateral ventricle
Where does the lateral ventricle begin?
Inferior horn in temporal lobe
Which lobes does the lateral ventricle travel through?
Parietal and Frontal
Where does the lateral ventricle terminate?
Interventricular Foramina- each connects to the central third ventricle
Where does posterior horn of lateral ventricle protrude?
Occipital lobe
Where does anterior horn of lateral ventricle protrue
Further into frontal lobe
Where is the midline 3rd ventricle located?
Between Subcortical nuclei
Where is the midline 4th ventricle located?
Brainstem
What connects the lateral ventricles and the 3rd ventricle?
Interventricular foramina of Monro
What runs between 3rd and 4th ventricle?
Aqueduct of Sylvius
What links 4th ventricle to subarachnoid space?
Two lateral foramina of Luschka
One median foramen of Magendie
What forms the roof of the 3rd ventricle?
Fornix
Where is the 4th ventricle located?
Between the pons and the medulla anteriorly and the cerebellum posteriorly
What is inferior to 4th ventricle?
Central canal of medulla oblongata
What is superior to the 4th ventricle?
Aqueduct of Sylvius
What forms the exit foramina for circulation of CSF between ventricles and subarachnoid space?
Foramina of Lushka and Magendie
The meninges superficial to deep:
Dura matter, arachnoid matter and pia matter
What is tightly adherent to endosteum of skull?
Dura matter
What forms venous sinuses?
Seperation of dura matter from endosteum of skull
What is the course of the falx cerebri?
Extends from crista galli to internal occipital protuberance
What is the function of falx cerebri?
Protects hemispheres from torsional forces
What is the course of tentorium cerebelli?
Runs between transverse sinus laterally and crest of petrous part of temporal bone anteriorly
Function of tentorium cerebelli?
Supports the weight of the occipital lobes
Where may venous blood leak?
Potential space between arachnoid matter and dura matter
What fuses with fibrous epineurium of spinal nerves?
Pia matter
What does the ophthalamic branch of the trigeminal nerve supply?
Supratentorial part of the dura and upper surface of the tentorium
What does the anterior ethmoidal branch supply
Anterior cranial fossa (to lesser extent)
What does the maxillary nerve supply?
Anterior part of middle cranial fossa
What does the meningeal branch of mandibular nerve supply?
Posterior part of middle cranial fossa
What supplies the tentorium cerebelli?
Meningeal branch of 9th cranial nerve
WHat supplies the upper part of bony posterior fossa?
Meningeal branch of 10th cranial nerve
What is the major blood supply of meninges?
Meningeal branch of maxiallary artery
