Cerebral Hemispheres Flashcards
How to fibres emerge from and converge on the cerebral cortex?
Corona radiata
What midline cleft separates the two hemispheres?
The median longitudinal fissure
What is the corpus callosum?
Sheet if white matter connecting the hemispheres
What extends into the median longitudinal fissure?
The falx cerebri
What separates the frontal and parietal lobe above from the temporal lobe below?
The lateral sulcus
What separates the parietal and frontal lobes?
The central sulcus
What lies immediately in front of the central sulcus?
The precentral gyrus
What is the function of the precentral gyrus?
It is the primary motor cortex
What lies in front of the precentral gyrus?
The premotor cortex- includes superior, middle and inferior frontal gyri
What lies immediately behind the central sulcus?
The postcentral gyrus
What is located in the postcentral gyrus?
The somatosensory cortex
What is posterior to the post central gyrus?
The intraparietal sulcus
What divides the superior and inferior parietal lobules?
The intraparietal sulcus
What lies deep in the lateral fissure?
The insula- covered by operculae
How many gyri is the temporal lobe divided into?
3- superior, inferior and middle temporal gyri
Where is the primary auditory cortex located?
Superior temporal gyrus, specifically transverse temporal gyrus
What marks the location of the primary visual cortex?
The calcarine sulcus, medial surface of the occipital lobe
How many laminae are located over the old part of the brain
3
How many lamina are located over the newer part of the brain?
6
What sort of information does the posterior cerebrum receive?
Information from outside world via somatosensory, primary visual and primary auditory cortices
What is the function of the limbic areas on the medial surface of the hemispheres?
Storage and retrieval of information
Where is Broca’s area located?
The inferior frontal gyrus
What is the function of Broca’s area?
To assemble spoken language
What is the supplementary motor cortex?
The area corresponding to premotor cortex on the medial surface of the hemispheres
What is the most anterior part of the parietal lobe?
The postcentral gyrus
How does primary visual cortex receive input from the retina?
Via the lateral geniculate nuclei of the thalamus
What types of fibres make up white matter?
3- association, commisural and projection
What is the function of association fibres?
Connect cortical areas lying within one cerebral hemisphere
What is the function of commisure fibres?
Run from one cerebral hemisphere to the same area in the other- connects functionally equivalent areas
What is the function of Projection Fibres?
Pass between cerebral cortex and subcortical areas
When is the premotor cortex active?
When learned motor routines are completed in response to external cues
What does the supplementary cortex respond to?
Internal cues, in particular motor planning
Give example of association fibres.
Arcuate Fasiculus
Give example of commissural fibres.
Corpus Callosum
Give example of projection fibres.
Corticospinal pathway
