Q

What is a common way to look at a chromosome?

A
  • This includes a karyotype (stains and organizes chromosomes to make structure more apparent)

Q

What are 3 interesting things that you can see by looking at a karyotype?

A

1) number of chromosomes is always same for given species (varies between species)
2) in eukaryotes, chromosomes often come in identical pairs = homologs
3) chromosomes duplicate = chromatids

Q

What are the steps of cell cycle?

A

The cell cycle is a 4-stage process consisting of Gap 1 (G1), synthesis (S), Gap 2 (G2) and mitosis (M), which a cell undergoes as it grows and divides.

Q

What are “cyclins” and “cdks”?

A

They are proteins that play a central role, concentrations rise and fall and it effects the way the cell moves through

Q

what is the connection between cell cycle and cancer?

A
  • cells that stop cycling always arrest in G1
  • G1 –> S is critical
  • S–> G2 looks for internal signs
  • G1–> S looks for external
  • uncontrolled cell growth causes cancer
