Mandelian Genetics Flashcards
1
Q
Who was Evan Darwin? What was his theory?
A
- Evan Darwin based his whole theory of evolution on “descent with modification”
- He spent lots of time breeding pigeons, trying to figure out the puzzle of heredity, but he failed
2
Q
Who is Mendel? What was his experiment?
A
- Mendel succeeded in solving the puzzle of heredity
- Many traits appeared to show continuous variation, mendel focused on when it was not continuous but when it was discrete
- he chose organism and started with a trait that bred true (peas and pea crossing)
3
Q
Heterozygous
A
Ss
4
Q
Homozygous
A
SS or ss
5
Q
what is the law of segregation?
A
segregation of alleles into each gamete (punnet square or probability calculator)
6
Q
How does the probability theory work?
A
- probability of two independent events happening if product of each event happening
- probability of mutually exclusive events is the sum
7
Q
Genotype
A
- set of alleles an organism has
8
Q
What is an example of a sex-linked trait?
A
- colour blindness - genes linked because on the same chromosome
- results from gene on X chromosome that is non functional and therefore cannot make the protein properly, has been mutated
9
Q
Hemizygous
A
When a gene is missing from one of the chromosomes
10
Q
Wild type vs mutant allele
A
- Wild: functional allele
- Mutant allele: defective
