What is the function of the Golgi apparatus (DE: Golgi-Apparat)?

A

The Golgi apparatus receives proteins from the endoplasmatic reticulum and modifies them. For example it may add sugar molecules to them. The Golgi apparatus then packages the modified proteins into vesicles that can be transported.
