  • rice = principal exported crop from the Carolinas
  • native Americans used as slaves
  • need for west African slaves will grow as rice is cultivated further
  • Charles Town = busiest seaport in the South - the colonists in the Carolinas are doing a lot of things right and are flourishing

  • reputation for being irreligious
  • separates from south Carolina in 1712
