A
  • presidential election of 1876 ends with no clear winner
  • tie is broken by house of representatives
  • no way were republics (north) going to let a democrats (south) become president
  • deals - Hayes (R) becomes president. the south receives railroads (badly needed) and all US troops are removed from the South
