- some went to help - but not many
- looked down upon by southerners

- called “traitors” by some in the south

civil rights bill of 1866
A
- will not be passed
- attempted to end discrimination
- actual law won’t be passed until 1964 (98 years later)

compromise of 1877
A
- presidential election of 1876 ends with no clear winner
- tie is broken by house of representatives
- no way were republics (north) going to let a democrats (south) become president
- deals - Hayes (R) becomes president. the south receives railroads (badly needed) and all US troops are removed from the South
