- 1876 the Great Strike - first strike every - railroad industry (#1 industry in america). president Hayes told workers to go back to war (sent in army). union lose/owners win
- 1886 Haymarket square (chicago) - bomb explodes during strike killing workers and police. unions look bad
- AFL - national union - wanted an 8 hour day
- collective bargaining - sit down and talk

strikes are ugly. workers are upset. owners are upset, the community is upset at the lack of production. collective bargaining is the key. sit down, talk, and solve the problem
