  • 1876 the Great Strike - first strike every - railroad industry (#1 industry in america). president Hayes told workers to go back to war (sent in army). union lose/owners win
  • 1886 Haymarket square (chicago) - bomb explodes during strike killing workers and police. unions look bad
  • AFL - national union - wanted an 8 hour day
  • collective bargaining - sit down and talk
