- desegregation (whites and blacks rode the buses)
- often ended in violence against the freedom riders

A
- 250,000 march
- peaceful - on live television
- king: “i have a dream…”
- after this march - it was obvious things were going to change

birmingham (1963)
A
- children peacefully protest
- children are hit with fire hoses and police dogs on live TV
- a church is bombed on a sunday morning - little girls are killed
- “bombingham” becomes the nickname
- the nation is horrified - and wants change

civil rights act

- 1964 - discrimination is banned in all public places
- not everyone will follow the law
- major step forward in the movement

voting rights act
A
- 1965 - literacy test is eliminated as a requirement for voting
- you don’t have to pass a test to vote

- symbol of the movement (fist in the air)
- 1968 olympic games - two americans show sign while national anthem is played - had medals stripped

A
- movement turns militant
- black panthers were protecting african americans form white police violence in the cities (think birmingham)
- would use violence if needed (martin luther king jr did not agree)

malcolm x
A
- nation of islam
- believed that whites and blacks should be segergated (why would you want to live next to a white racist?)
- he preached self-defense if needed
- was assassinated by the nation of islam in 1965 because he said “not all whites are bad people”
- civil rights took a huge hit

- 1968 - memphis, tennesse
- king is assassinated by james earl ray
- voice of the movement is silenced

if you want to change something you must be willing to sacrifice yourself for that change. it doesn’t mean you will die, but as we see with the civil rights movements, many of its leaders gave their life for change
