What are the two main structures of the anatomy of the breast?
Stroma. Epithelium containing ducts and lobules.
What are the 4 main clinical presentations of breast disease?
Pain. Palpable mass - cysts, benign tumours, cancer. Nipple Discharge. Mammographic abnormality.
What age can women have a breast cancer screen?
50-70 years, 3 yearly.
What are the benign diseases of the breast?
Fibrocystic disease, Fat necrosis, Mastitis
What is fibrocystic disease?
Lumpiness in one or both breasts, pain/tenderness, hormone related changes.
What is Fat Necrosis?
Trauma to the breast that can result in localised haemorrhage and necrosis. Hard lump.
What is Mastitis?
Inflammatory condition, red, tender, warm breast, blocked ducts.
What are the 2 types of benign tumours of the breast?
Fibroadenoma, Papilloma
How do you diagnose a breast tumour?
Clinical impression - needle biopsy. Radiology, Cytology/Histology.
What is Papilloma?
Wart-like growth in the ducts. Benign.
What are the symptoms of Papilloma?
Bleed/discharge from the nipple.
What is fibroadenoma?
Rubbery lumps, benign.
What are the risk factors for breast cancer?
Incidence increases with age, Hereditary.
What are the symptoms of breast cancer?
Lump, skin dimpling, change in skin colour or texture, change in how the nipple looks, clean or bloody fluid that leaks from the nipple.
What are the different types of malignant tumours?
Ductal carcinoma in-situ, Invasive ductal carcinoma, Invasive lobular carcinoma.
