The Body At Work- skeletal Flashcards
Functions of the skeleton…
in sport
Protection of the Vital organs
•in soccer, when header ball, skull protects brain
Movement
Provides a tidbit structure for the attachment of the muscles. The muscles bull on the bone and produce movement
•the bicep muscle pull on radius to cause flexion at Elbow during a bicep curl
Shape or support
•skeleton good frame which allows dance to present good carriage and good posture during the performance
Blood cell production
Blood cells are manufactured within bone marrow in larger bones of body
Mineral storage
Stores calcium. Calcium can temporarily absorbed from bones if our diet does not supply sufficient calcium for our need
Synovial membrane
The joint is surrounded by a synovial membrane which produces synovial fluid
Synovial fluid
This lubricates the joint, reducing friction in the joint and ensuring it allows smooth efficient movement. Also nourishes the cartilage
Cartilage
Acts as a shock absorber / reduces friction
Ligaments
Holds bone in place
Bone - bone. Stabilise joint
Tendon
Muscle to bone
Enable moment
Bursae
Sacs filled with liquid that floats inside joint helps prevent friction
Ball and socket
Eg hip joint and shoulders Full ROM All direction Flexion Extension Circumduction Rotation Abduction Adduction
Hinge
Eg elbow, knee, ankle
flexion
Extension
Pivot
Head or neck
Rotation
Saddle
Eg Thumb joint
forward back right left
Condyloid
Eg wrist
abduction, abduction, flexion, extension, circumduction
Gliding
Eg between tarsal in foot or vertby and spine
Side to side
Back and forth
Flexion
Bend
Extension
Straight
Abduction
Movement away from midline
Adduction
Movement towards middle of body
Circumduction
Limbs move in a circle
Plantar- flexion
Pointing your toe
Dorsi- flexion
Pull your toe towards you
Rotation
Limbs move in a circular movement around a fixed joint towards or away from midline
Long term effects of training in Skelton.
Regular and appropriate
🍄bone and skeletal tissues become stronger reinforcing the criss cross matrix structure of bone
🍄cartilage thickens - helps cushion joint
🍄tendon thickens - withstands greater friction
