the basics Flashcards
what does the anatomical position look like
standing straight, arms by side, palms forward, feet together.
what plane divides the body into anterior and posterior portions?
coronal plane
what plane divides the body into superior and inferior portions?
transverse plane
what plane passes through the a structure or the entire body at an angle?
oblique
what plane divides a structure or the body vertically into right and left portions?
sagittal
what do medial and lateral mean?
Medial - nearer to the midline
Lateral - away from the midline
what do deep and superficial mean?
Deep - away from the surface of the body
Superficial - close to the surface of the body
what do proximal and distal mean?
Proximal - nearer to the origination of the structure (the shoulder is proximal to the wrist)
Distal - further away from the origination of a structure (the fingers are distal to the wrist)
what do posterior and anterior mean?
Posterior - the back surface
Anterior - the front surface
what do cranial and caudal mean?
Cranial - towards the head
Caudal - towards the tail
what do superior and inferior mean?
Superior - above
Inferior - below
what is abduction and adduction?
Abduction - moves away from longitudinal axis
Adduction - moves toward longitudinal axis
what is circumduction?
circular motion without rotation
what does lateral and medial mean?
Lateral - external rotation
Medial - internal rotation
what is prone position and supine position?
Prone position - body is lying facing down.
Supine position - forearm in anatomical position (palm facing up)
