the atmosphere - carbon footprint Flashcards
1
Q
what is the carbon footprint?
A
the total amount of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases emitted over the full life cycle of a product, service or event
2
Q
how to reduce carbon dioxide emissions?
A
- insulate homes or turn down heating (gas used in homes)
- use public transport such as buses and trains as they release less CO2 per passenger (cars release CO2)
- use renewable energy resources of electricity eg wind power
- reduce how much electricity used in homes such as switching to energy saving lightbulbs and turning off appliances at the plug than leaving them on standby
3
Q
what are the problems with the solutions to reducing carbon dioxide emissions?
A
- expensive and people are reluctant to pay
- inconvenient. people like driving over public transport such as
4
Q
how to reduce methane levels? + problem
A
- people eat less beef and less dairy products (cows release methane).
problem= people enjoy eating these + unlikely to change diet - in landfills, trap methane and burn it to produce electricity. good idea as methane a more powerful greenhouse gas than carbon dioxide
problem= trapping + burning methane costs money
