rate of reaction - effect of concentration on rate Flashcards
what is the collision theory?
The theory where chemical reactions can only take place when the reacting particles collide with each other. collisions must have sufficient energy
what is rate of reaction determined by?
frequency of successful collisions
start of a reaction time graph
steep line as large number of collisions per second due to lots of reactants
middle of reaction time graph
reaction slows down due to less reactant molecules so fewer number of collisions per second
end of reaction time graph
no collisions
What happens to number of collisions when concentration increased?
more collisions so faster rate of reaction
what happens as we increase concentration?
rate of reaction becomes proportional to concentration
higher concentration =
steeper line, faster reaction. more product at the end as more reactant molecules so fewer
