chemical analysis - identifying non metal ions Flashcards

1
Q

how do we test for carbonate ion?

A
  1. add dilute acid to our sample
  2. if carbonate present, the acid will react to make carbon dioxide gas. we will see effervescence (fizzing). that doesn’t prove we have carbon dioxide gas
  3. bubble the gas through limewater. if goes cloudy, proves we have carbon dioxide showing we started with a carbonate ion

Q

how do we test for halid ions?

A
  1. add dilute acid to the sample
  2. add dilute silver nitrate solution
  3. halide ions produce a precipitate of the silver halide. each halide makes a different colour precipitate

Q

how do we test for sulfate ions?

A
  1. add dilute hydrochloric acid to our sample
  2. add barium chloride solution
