resources - using earth’s resources Flashcards
what do we use resources for?
to provide warmth, shelter, food and transport
in most cases, what are resources produced by?
agriculture
eg cotton produced from a plant. modern agriculture allows enough colton plant to be brown to meet the needs of the world
what do humans plant? what are these used for?
trees which are used for timber or fuel
many power stations run on biofuel such as wood chips
__________ helps us to use the Earth’s ________ more ___________
agriculture, resources, efficiently
what has chemistry replaced some natural resources with?
a synthetic alternative
example: rubber. natural rubber comes from sap of tree however synthetic rubber is made from crude oil. around two thirds of the rubber used in there world is now synthetic
some natural resources are ______. examples?
finite - they can’t be replaced as quickly as being used
example: fossil fuels. humans use millions of kilograms of fossil fuels everyday however rate at which they form is slower than this. they will eventually run out
example: metal. huge amounts of metal extracted from earth’s crust + continue using them at this rate they will run out
some resources are ________. examples
renewable - replace these as quickly as we will use them so will never run out of
example: wood
why is it important for human activities to be sustainable?
so we can meet our needs without preventing future generations from meeting theirs
how does chemistry play a role in how we use our resources?
- artificial resources allow us to grow more food with the land available.
- also helps to provide water safe to drink
- processes such as photo mining and bio leaching help us to extract metals more efficiently
