A

19th April - he sailed to Cadiz harbour and destroys 30 ships and many provisions - oak barrels in three days.

Cannon mounting - smaller gun carriages so recoils less far

What was Philip’s plan?

A

130 ships, 2431 cannons and 30,000 men
Under command of Duke of Medina-Sidonia
Ordered to sail along the English Channel to the Netherlands and join the Duke of Parma
Then they would transport 27,000 troops to Kent and then Parma would march in London, dethrone England and make England Catholic

Armada events

  • May 1588 fleet of 130 ships set off from Lisbon sailing past France and up the English Channel. 6 ships had to turn round due to storms and the Spanish was running out of food and lead by a land based general
  • Armada spotted by the English in the middle of July 1588
  • English fleet attacks the Armada through the channel and force them to Calais
  • Armada waits in Calais for Duke of Parma for his army to join
  • Midnight 28th July English sent fire ships to Armada. Armada cuts off anchors and drifts north
  • Spanish attempt to reform at Gravelines but English attack and sink five ships
  • Armada escaped North due to wind
  • Armada sails around North of Scotland. Wind blew armada onto shores and destroyed many ships
  • 10,000 out of 30,000 men and 67 out of 130 ships returned to Spain
