Although the army was only 100,000 strong, many Ex-soldiers still had weapons (many of these soldiers hated the left wing). Ebert ordered for the army to organise these soldiers into units (Freikorps) and by March had 200,000 men

He lost control of them and by late March 1920 many were due to be disbanded. This caused them to turn against the government.
