The anatomy of memory and function Flashcards
What is episodic memory
Remembering events, conversations, experiences
Where does encoding transfer memory to
- Encoding into short-term memory
Where does consolidation transfer memory to
- Consolidation into long-term memory, recall
Key areas for episodic memory
- Hippocampus, located in medial temporal lobe(MTL)
Process of consolidation
Hippocampus –> Fornix –> mammillary bodies –> anterior thalamus
Area responsible for parts of a memory
- Neocortical sensory areas(as for perception, imagery)
How does the hippocampus link to the neocortex
- Via the parahippocampal gyrus
Modulation of memory by emotion
- Amygdala
Modulation of memory by attention
- Anterior cingulate gyrus
What is semantic memory
- Conceptual understanding, categorisation, knowledge, information
Where does link formation between parts of a concept occur
- anterior(ant-inf-lat) temporal cortex
What does the categorising of visual perception occur
- Posterior inferior temporal cortex(including fusiform)
Part of the brain responsible for experience of emotion or evaluation of affective relevance
- Amygdala
- Amygdala in positive or negative emotion, but especially negative, fear
Regulation and contextualisation of emotion
- Ventral frontal cortex(lateral vs medial)
Learning emotional relevance, recalling emotion
- Hippocampus
