The 4 Major Types of Research Flashcards
What is Historical Research?
A look back at previous findings in order to study a behavior in the past
What is Descriptive Research & the different types of it?
Collecting data about conditions, attitudes, or characteristics of one subject or a group
Different types-
1. Case study: an in depth investigation about one person (something universal about that person)
2. Cross- sectional study: you take one group of subjects at one point in time
3. Longitudinal study: you take one group, but study them at multiple points in time (can show trends)
What is Correlation Research?
- Attempts to determine whether a relationship exist between two or more variables
- strength & direction of relationship
- cannot show cause & effect
- correlation coefficient (r) ranges to -1.00 through 1.00
What is Experimental Research & what kind of variables go with it in experimenting?
-can show cause & effect through group compassion
Variables to Experimenting:
- Control group: baseline
- Experimental: treatment or something has been done differently
- Independent Variable: treatment (cause)
- Dependent Variable: what you measure (outcome)
What is Validity?
The degree in which an instrument, piece of equipment, or psychological test is supposed to measure
What is Reliability?
How consistent are the results are
What is Interrater Reliability?
the degree in which two or more independent psychologist can come up with the same results/ diagnostics
What is Intrarter Reliability?
the degree in which one psychologist can come up with the same results results/ diagnostics time &time again
What is the Four main ethical safeguards used to protect a subjects rights?
- Informed consent (tells them about the issues/ side-effects that can occur while testing)
- Confidential (Information about the subject not shared)
- Can leave at anytime
- Debriefing (having to tell the subjects what happened in the testing after the study it’s done; telling them what group they were in, did the treatment help, etc)
