What are 6 Sleep Disorders?
A
- Somnambulism (sleep walking)
- Sleep Apnea (stops breathing)
- Narcolepsy (sleep attack)
- Insomnia
- Nightmares (frighting dream)
- Night or Sleep Terror

What is Somnambulism? (sleep walking)
A
- a genetic disorder
- happens in stages 3 and 4
- happens in the first third of the night
- amnesia for the event (can’t remember it)

What are some facts about Somnambulism? (sleep walking)
A
- if one person in your family has it, there is an 80% chance that it will get passed down
- at least 30% of kids have an episode of sleep walking, then don’t ever get one again when they grow up
- people can grow out of sleep walking in puberty or later in adulthood
- 2% of kids frequently sleep walk

What is Sleep Apnea? (stops breathing)
A
- happens in 15-90 secs intervals
- happens 500-800 times a night
- the person doesn’t go into deep sleep
tired in the morning - for every 2 men, 1 women is affected

When can you get Sleep Apnea? (stops breathing)
A
- if you are morbidly obese for your age and the kind of person you are
- if you have enlarged tonsils
- if you have an overly thick pallet (roof of mouth)
- if your adenoid glands are enlarged

What is Narcolepsy? (sleep attack)
A
- a genetic disorder
- person falls asleep randomly
- each episode last 15-20 mins
- when falling asleep, the person doesn’t go into the stages, but instead goes straight into REM sleep
- the person has normal sleep cycles
- the person can develop cataplexy (goes completely floppy and loses muscle tone, this happens when strong emotions or laughter causes to person to physically collapse)`

What is Insomnia?
A
- difficulty falling asleep or falling asleep then waking up and not being able to go back to sleep
- this can happen more if the person is stressed out
- the person doesn’t get a normal sleep cycle

What is a Nightmare? (frighting dream)
A
- happens in REM
- happens in early morning
- over excitement or going to bed latter than normal can trigger an Nightmare
- eating heavy meals right before bed can trigger Nightmares
- last for about 1-2 mins
- no hallucinations
- more common in girls than boys

What is a Night or Sleep Terrors?
A
- happens in deep sleep
- happens at the beggining of the night
- people hallucinate during this (they feel and see things that aren’t actually there)
- happens in stages 3 and 4 of sleep
- boys are more affected than girls
- when the person is experiencing this, the become paralyzed
- a genetic disorder
- last up to 20 mins
