Sensation Flashcards
What is sensation?
The process of Stimulating a Receptor that gives rise to the Neural Impulse
What are the two types of sensory threshold?
- Absolute Threshold
2. Difference Threshold/ noticeable difference
What is an Absolute Threshold?
The minimum amount of energy to produce a reliable sensory experience
What is the Difference Threshold/ Noticeable difference?
The smallest psychical difference that can be recognized as a difference
What are the 4 basic types of sensory receptors & what part of the body do they correlate to?
- Photoreceptors (eyes)
- Chemoreceptors (nose & mouth)
- Mechanoreceptors (everywhere)
- Thermoreceptors (everywhere)
What does the Photoreceptors do?
detects light, that results in vision
What does the Chemoreceptors do?
detects chemicals, that result in taste and smell
What does the Mechanoreceptors do?
detects movement, that results in hearing and touch sensations
What does the Thermoreceptors do?
detects temperature, that gives a hot or cold sensation
How do we taste?
What ever we are tasting have to contain chemical molecules that dissolve in saliva, & we have to produce enough saliva to break down the chemicals
What are the 4 main qualities of taste?
- Sweet
- Sour
- Salty
- Bitter
Where are the Receptors on are tongue for sweet, sour, salty, & bitter?
- In the tip of the tongue for sweet receptors
- In the middle of the sides of the tongue for sour
- All around the edges for salty
- In the back of the tongue for bitter
