What is Preservation Protection Theory?
Evolutionary perspective- we sleep when we would be at our greatest personal risk or spending it for the least benefit
What is Restorative Sleep Theory?
we sleep in order to repair and revitalize/ re-energize our body (helps brain)
What are the stages of sleep? (NREM)(1 cycle)
- Stage 1: still fast pattern of brain waves
- Stage 2: brain waves start to slow down
- Stage 3: slowest brain activity
- Stage 4: deepest sleep/ restorative sleep
What kind of sleep come after NREM sleep?
REM sleep
How long is a NREM cycle?
90 mins (stages 1-4)
How many NREM cycles does an average person get per night?
5-6 cycles
How does the NREM cycle change when you sleep?
first cycle- 80 mins NREM and 10 mins REM
Morning 60 mins NREM and 30 mins of REM
