What is a Psychoactive drug?
any substance that can have a Psychopharmacological effect causing altered behavior, mood, and consciousness
What are the 4 Basic categories of Psychoactive drugs?
- Narcotics
- CNS (Central Nervous System) Depressants
- CNS stimulus
- Hallucinogens
What are Narcotics made of?
- opiates (natural)
- opioids (synthetic)
How addictive are Narcotics?
highly addictive
What are opiates/ opioids made of?
Opiates: Natural poppies (flower)
Opioids:
Narenal Naxoxene- overdose on acute toxicity
What does CNS Depressants lead to?
Korsakoff’s Syndrome (mainly caused by chronic alcoholism, but can be caused by any depressants)
What can CNS Depressants cause?
- can effect the brain and the liver
- Thiamine is in food and if you drink, you will feel full and then you don’t eat which means you don’t get Thiamine
- Thiamine is need for brain activity, without Thiamine it leads to Anterograde Amnesia (you can only remember the past and cannot learn new information without forgetting it soon after)(permanent brain damage, non-reversible)
What are some CNS Stimulants
- Caffeine
- Nicotine
- Amphetamines
What are one of the main Hallucinogens withdraw effects?
Flashbacks to when the person used them
What is one of the Major Hallucinogens?
Marijuana
