Thalamus Flashcards
What does the thalamus do?
Processes info and organizes it before transmitting it to the cerebral cortex
- Receives sensory inputs
- Transmits conscious awareness
- Receives/Process all internal motor systems
Functions of the thalamus
General Arousal
Sensory Connections
Motor Connections
Emotional tone/Affect
4 Regional Zones and Functions
Anterior = Affective
Medial = Arousal
Lateral = Motor
Posterior = Sensory
Limbic lobe
Anterior nucleus:
- information from subcortical limbic to cortical limbic (cingulate gyrus)
- emotional tone
Dorsomedial Nucleus (Prefrontal)
- information to and from prefrontal lobe
- judgment and reasoning
Ventral Anterior Nucleus
- information from globus pallidus (basal ganglia) and cerebellum to premotor areas and M1
- motor planning and regulation
Ventral Lateral Nucleus
- information from cerebellum and globus pallidus to M1 and premotor areas (basal ganglia)
- motor output regulation
Ventral Posterior Nucleus
- information to sensory areas of cortex
VPM + VPL
- somatosensory information to cortex
VPI
- vestibular information to cortex
Pulvinear Nucleus
- information among cortical association cortices (Brodman’s Area 5/7, 18/19)
Lateral Geniculate Nucleus
- information to primary visual cortex (Brodman’s Area 17, occipital lobe)
- vision
Medial Geniculate Nucleus
- information to primary auditory cortex (Area 41)
- auditory
Intralaminar, Centromedian, Midline Nuclei
- information from reticular system to widespread areas
- arousal
Thalamic Pain Syndrome: Definition
Infarct on VPL (somatosensory cortex)
