Tests for ions and gases Flashcards
Flame test for lithium
burns with a crimson red flame
Flame test for Sodium
burns with a yellow orange flame
Flame test for Potassium
burns with a lilac flame
Flame test for Calcium
burns with a brick red flame
Test for ammonia (NH4+)
Add sodium hydroxide to a solution, if ammonia is present the potent gas is given off
Test using sodium hydroxide solution
Copper
Iron 2+
Iron 3+
Blue
Sludgy green
Reddish brown
Test for halides
Chloride, Bromide, iodide
Add dilute nitric acid followed by silver nitrate solution
Chloride - gives a white precipitate of silver chloride
Bromide - gives a cream precipitate of silver bromide
Iodide - gives a yellow precipitate of silver iodide
Test for sulfate ion
Add dilute HCL followed by barium chloride SO 4(2+) will form a white precipitate if present
Test to detect carbonates
Add dilute hydrochloric acid if carbonates are present then carbon dioxide will be released
You can test for carbon dioxide using lime water
Test for chlorine gas
Chlorine bleaches damp litmus paper
Test for Oxygen
Relights a glowing splint
Test for Carbon Dioxide
Turns limewater cloudy
Test for Hydrogen
Makes a squeaky pop with a lighted splint
Test for Ammonia
Turns damp litmus paper blue
