Covalent Substances Flashcards
Explain the formation of a hydrogen atom
Hydrogen atoms have just one electron
They only need one more to complete the 1st shell
Covalent bonds are
Shared pair of electrons with other atoms
Both atoms feel like they have a full outer shell
Covalent bonding involves
Strong attraction between the bonding pair of electrons and the nuclei of the atoms involved in the bond
Simple molecular forces are
Usually liquids solids or gases with low melting points
Why do simple molecular substances have low melting points
Weak intermolecular forces
Why do giant covalent structures have high melting points and boiling points
As there are many strong covalent bonds that have to be broken which requires a lot of heat energy
