Paper 2 Flashcards
What is Avogadro’s number
6.023 x 10(23). So you can think of a mole as the Avagadro number of particles in a substance, where the particles are atoms, molecules, ions or electrons
Avogadro’s law
one mole of gas occupies 24dm(3)
Molar volume
The space that one mole of gas takes up
Molar volume at RTP
One mole of any gas always occupies 24 dm(3) at room temperature and pressure
Formula to find molar volume
Volume dm (3)= moles of gas x 24 Or Volume dm(3) = mass of gas/Mr of gas x 24
Calculate percentage yield
actual yield x 100
theoretical yield
Structure of giant ionic structure
The ions are held together in a closely packed 3D lattice arrangement by the attraction between oppositely charged ions
Why do giant ionic structures have high melting and boiling points
Because the electrostatic attraction is very strong and a lot of energy is needed to overcome the strong attraction
Explain the reactive reactivities of the elements in Group1
As you go down Group 1, the outermost electron in the shell is further from the nucleus. Which means the attraction between the outermost electron and the nucleus becomes less. So as you go down Group 1 the atoms get bigger, the outer electron is more easily lost making the metals more reactive
What type of polymer is nylon
condensation polymer
What small molecules accompany the formation of a condensation polymer
Water or hydrogen chloride
What monomers are used in the production of nylon
a dicarboxylic acid and a diamine
