Ethanol Flashcards
Manufacturing of ethanol using fermentation
The raw material used is is sugar then it’s converted into ethanol using yeast
At temperature of 30 C
Uses renewable resources that are easy to grow
Ethanol produced is not very concentrated
How is ethanol manufactured
Ethene is produced from crude oil
Ethanol is produced by passing Ethene and steam over a phosphoric acid catalyst at a temperature of 300 C and pressure of 60-70 atm
How is ethanol dehydrated to form Ethene
Removing water from ethanol turns it back into Ethene using the dehydration reaction
Ethanol vapour is passed over a hot catalyst of aluminium oxide and provides a large surface area for the reaction
Ethene and steam ads/disads
Very fast, low labour costs
Pure
But it is a finite resource used and expensive equipment needed
Fermentation ads/disads
Very slow, uses sugar as a renewable source
Uses cheap equipment but high labour costs
Very impure and needs further processing
