Atoms Flashcards
Name two diffusion experiments
Ammonia and hydrogen chloride
Bromine gas and air
Describe the purpose of the potassium magnate and water experiment
The potassium slowly spreads out through the water the fill the beaker
This shows the particles diffusing out and displays the random motion of liquid particles
Atom
the smallest particle of a chemical element that can exist
Molecule
a group of atoms bonded together, representing the smallest fundamental unit
Element
each of more than one hundred substances that cannot be chemically interconverted or broken down into simpler substances
Compound
a thing that is composed of two or more different elements that are chemically bonded together
Mixture
A compound that has no chemical bond and can be separated through physical methods
Describe filtration
Can be used if your product is an insoluble solid
used in purification
Describe Crystallisation
Used the separate a soluble solid from a solution
Slowly heat the solution in an evaporating dish, crystals will then start to form
Describe Chromatography
Method used to separate out mixtures
Chromatography works because different dyes move up to paper at different rates, some will stick to the paper an others will dissolve
The distance the dyes travels depends on the solvent and the paper used
Describe simple Distillation
Used for separating a out a liquid from a solution
The solution is heated, the substance with the lowest boiling point evaporates and is collected
This is only used to separate solutions with very different boiling points
Describe Fractional distillation
Used to separate a mixture of liquids
Heat the mixture and the different liquids with different boiling points will evaporate at different temperature
The column used is cooler near the tops the liquid will only get part the way up before condensing and being collected
