- the evaluation of goods sold in the retail marketplace.
- determines if products comply with regulatory requirements and industry standards.
- identifies how a product will perform for the consumer or against a competitors products.
product testing seeks to
- ensure that consumers can understand what product will do for them.

- increase consumer protection by checking the claims made during marketing strategies, such as advertising.

- to provide products and services according to industry standards.
- some standards will be voluntary (meaning the industry practices self-regulation) or mandatory (government issued regulation).
