Elastomers Flashcards
1
Q
elastomers
A
a natural or synthetic polymer having elastic properties. eg rubber
2
Q
properties of elastomers
A
- cant melt, before melting they pass into a gaseous state.
- swell in the presence of certain solvents.
- generally insoluble.
- flexible and elastic.
- lower creep resistance than other thermoplastic materials.
3
Q
creep resistance
A
small difference in thickness, creeps down due to gravity.
4
Q
polyurethanes
A
- used in textile industry for manufacture of: lycra, foam, scooter wheels, lacquer for wood.
- fits to any shape.
- breathable but not waterproof.
- good flexibility and performance.
- chlorine resistant.
5
Q
natural rubber
A
material used in the manufacture of gaskets, shoe heels and wellys.
6
Q
Polybutadiene
A
- Elastomer material used on the wheels of tyres of vehicles, given the extraordinary wear resistance.
- Flexible, resistant, grippy
- uses after life: playground, surfaces, barriers
7
Q
neoprene
A
- used mostly in the manufacture of wetsuits, also used as wire insulation belts.
- not waterproof, allows water in but seals it so body can warm up water.
- fits to body
- customisable
- salt resistant
- good insulator
- cellular structure
8
Q
sillicone
A
- used in a wide range of products and areas due to their excellent thermal and chemical resistance.
- used in moulds, babies dummies, medical prophesies.
- flexible
- non stick
- can go in oven
- sealant
- water resistant and food safe
