Composite Materials Flashcards
composite material: definition
structural material made when two or more materials are bonded together
composite material: structure
consists of a reinforcing material that provides strength and a bonding agent (the matrix - in the from of glues and resins)
carbon fibre
carbon fibres
epoxy resin
reinforced concrete
steel bars
concrete
glass reinforced plastic
glass fibres
polyester resin
laminated glass
plastic (polycarbonate)
polyester resin
tufnol
woven linen layers
phenolic resin
benefits of composite materials
- material has improved mechanical and other properties
- GOOD STRENGTH TO WEIGHT RATIO
fibre glass
a string of fibre woven together
loose strands
non-woven matting of short strands
a matrix of polyester resin
used in large items. e.g. boat hulls, septic tanks, pond liners
production using fibre glass (lay-up procedure)
- wax applied as a mould release.
- gel coat is applied to provide colour.
- fibre glass, resin + catalyst is applied in layers and rolled out.
- after curing, the part removed from the mould. Excess material is trimmed and it is ready for assembly.
composite material safety
- skin irritation due to styrene
- peroxide in catalyst causes damage when in contact with the eyes
- toxic gasses are given off
- fibres cause skin irritation
- dust generated when finishing
- styrene vapours are a fire hazard
