quality assurance
QA
Refers to a program for the systematic monitoring and evaluation of the various aspects of a product, project, service, or facility to ensure that the standards of quality are being met.
quality control
A manufacturer is interested in the quality of the product that they produce.
A consumer is interested in the quality of the product that they buy.
features of a quality control process are:
- products must meet certain targets.
- ways of measuring the quality of a product and detecting quality changes.
complete inspection
- complete or 100% inspection, involves inspecting each item.
- expensive
- if testing quality results in the destruction of the item.
- not fool proof
- 100% inspection is operated on items where the consequences of letting a defective item through could be quite severe. eg avionic systems
sampling
- a certain size from a batch
- accept or reject an entire batch
- never can be absolutely certain about the quality of the batch based on the quality of one sample.
inspection objectives
- locate a problem
- stops the manufacture of spoilt/semi-finished products
- makes process more economical
types of inspection
1) revolving process, patrolling or floor inspection.
2) fixed inspection, batch taken to inspection room.
3) key point inspection, looks at potential faults.
4) final inspection

total quality management
- Integrated system which involves the whole staff.
- Each department is treated as a client, therefore ensuring high standards.
eg production team must produce a high quality assured and will therefore fit perfectly.
