test 7 bicarbonate / pH chart Flashcards
1
Q
What does the bicarbonate/pH chart show
A
- the relationship between the pH and the bicarbonate ion concentration in the blood.
- The relationship between the two is defined by the Henderson Hasselbalch
equation
2
Q
increasing the pCO2 does what
A
- pushes curve to the left (lower pH)
3
Q
Normal buffer line
A
- relate specific pH value to a specific bicarbonate
4
Q
Respiratory changes
A
- hypoventilation pushes pCO2 isobar to the left (lower pH)
- hyperventilation pushes pCO2 isobar to the right (higher pH) =>blowing off more CO2
5
Q
Metabolic changes
A
- increased base and decrease hydrogen pushes buffer line up (higher bicarb)
- decreased base and increased hydrogen pushes buffer line down (lower bicarb)
