TEST 4-Nervous System Flashcards
Peripheral Nervous System
communicates responses
brings info to CNS and away from CNS
Sensory Nerves
detect stimuli and send information to CNS
Motor Nerves
relay information from CNS to responders (muscles, glands, etc)
Reflex Arc
receptor>sensory nerves>CNS>motor nerves>responders (muscles, glands)
Autonomic Nervous System
involuntary movement
automatic response-heartbeat, digestion, blinking
sympathetic: stress, bite or flight response, heart and breathing rate increase, more oxygen to muscles
parasympathetic: peace, return to normal, heart and breathing rate slows down, digestion returns
Somatic Nervous System
voluntary
walking, talking, writing
Botulism
toxin that prevents the release of neurotransmitters caused by bacteria (that produces the toxin)
Botox-makes face stop moving
Tetnus
toxin that blocks enzyme that destroys neurotransmitters after release
lockjaw-keep getting the same message until all the neurotransmitters are gone
normal-remove neurotransmitters by enzymes connecting to and help them leave
Multiple Sclerosis (MS)
destroys mylin sheath on nerves, mostly motor nerves
mylin sheath-covering on nerve
Central Nervous System
brain and spinal chord
tell everything what to do
coordinators of responses, the boss
