Test 2 Review (Part 1) Flashcards
Which tract is responsible for unconscious proprioception? Which part of the brain receives this information?
Spinocerebellar –> cerebellum
What type of cutaneous mechanoreceptor is responsible for fine touch (eg. reading braille)?
Merkel cells
see photo - Chancellor Merkel is finely touching her fingertips together
What type of cutaneous mechanoreceptor is responsible for grip control?
Meissner corpuscles
What type of cutaneous mechanoreceptor is responsible for vibration sensation?
Pacinian corpuscles
What neuronal fiber types are responsible for pain and temperature sensation?
A-delta and C fibers
What are the indications for tPA use?
Person over 18 w/ stroke symptoms with no hemorrhage on CT, less than 4.5 since the patient was last seen doing well
-there are a bunch of exclusion criteria
What are the contraindications/exclusion criteria for giving tPA to someone?
- Head trauma
- Stroke within the last 3 months
- Arterial punture within the last week
- Surgery within last 2 weeks
- Low platelets or prolonged INR
- Blood glucose <50mg/dL
Which cranial nerve is responsible for the constrictor pupillae muscle and which brainstem nuclei contains cell bodies for the presynaptic parasympathetic fibers? Where is this nuclei located in the brainstem?
CN III
Edinger-Westphal nucleus located in the midbrain
Which cranial nerves are involved in the corneal blink reflex?
Afferent - V1 (ophthalmic nerve)
Efferent - VII
Which nucleus in the brainstem receives taste fibers from the anterior 2/3 of the tongue? Which cranial nerve are these fibers associated with?
Fibers for taste from anterior 2/3 of tongue hitch rides on the lingual nerve (V3), then chorda tympani (VII) to eventually project onto the nucleus solitarius in the medulla.
Which cranial nerves innervate the three major salivary glands? What are the associated brainstem nuclei for these?
CN VII does submandibular and sublingual; superior salivatory nucleus
CN IX does parotid; inferior salivatory nucleus
Which cranial nerve innervates the lacrimal gland?
VII
What does nucleus ambiguus do? Where it is?
Motor for IX and X
In the medulla
What are the vermis and interhemispheric region of the cerebellum mostly responsible for?
Unconscious proprioception and smooth pursuit eye movements.
Are the cerebellar tracts for input from the spinal cord ipsilateral, or contralateral?
Ipsilateral!
