Organization of the CNS Flashcards
What is the function of the spinal cord?
send motor information and recieve sensory information
What are the 3 parts of the brainstem?
midbrain
pons
medulla
What is the function of the midbrain?
controls eye movement
relays visual and auditory info
What is the function of the pons?
contains CN V
ventral pons relays info from cerebral hemispheres to the cerebellum
What is the function of the medulla
contains CN VI - XII
with pons, regulated BP, respiration, arousal
What is the function of the cerebellum
fine motor skills
What is the function of the diencephalon?
shipping and recieving sensory and motor info from the cerebral cortex
controls the autonomic system and pituitary secretion
What is the function of the cerebral hemisphere
high level processing
What are the 3 deep structures of the cerebral hemispheres
basal ganglia
amygdala
hippocampus
What is the function of the corticospinal tract? where do the neurons decussate?
voluntary movement
decussate at the pyramidal tract in the medulla
What is the function of the dorsal column? where do the neurons decussate?
vibration, proprioception, deep touch
medial lemniscus in the medulla
What is the function of the spinothalamic tract? where does it decussate?
heat and pain
spinal level
